John Pinkerton (1758-1826) was born in Edinburgh but moved to London in 1781. He was the publisher of several works on geography and cartography but his largest atlas was the ‘Modern Atlas’ of 1815. A fascinating insight into the lack of knowledge of the interior of West Africa with vast swathes of territory left empty of knowledge. Phillips 724.
