A map of the State of Victoria with part of New South Wales above showing the railway lines already made and those projected by private contract. These are lines that are “projected by the government viz permanently levelled, surveyed & prepared for contract”. It also keys “projected extensions & trail lines”. There is also a note stating “The Electric Telegraph connects Melbourne with Geelong & the Heads of Port Phillip, with Ballarat, & with Castlemaine & Sandhurst”. The important Geelong-Ballarat railway line opened in 1862.
