This attractive map of the ancient British Isles was first published in a 1697 edition of Philippe Cluver’s ‘Introductio in Universam Geographiam’ in Amsterdam by Jan Wolters. Cluver (1580-1622) was born in Danzig and studied at Leiden and Oxford. The ‘Introductio’ was a historical book on geography first published in Leiden, 1624, with many late editions illustrated with a varying series of copperplate maps. From the pagination upper right, we can determine that this was from the second edition in 1711. Provenance: Doreen Green 1992; private English collection. Burden (2007) 732; Nordenskiold Collection (1979) 45; not in Shirley (1988); Shirley (2004) T.Cluv 8a no. 8.
