A bird’s-eye view of Tripoli, Lebanon, from Henry de Beauvau’s ‘Relation Journaliere du Voyage du Levant’ first published in 1608. The 1615 edition offered here is the first to be illustrated. ‘Beauveau, diplomat and general. undertook his journey in 1604 from near Venice, de Beauveau being at that time in the service of de Salignac, French ambassador to the Porte. He had previously taken part in the Turkish-Hungarian campaign in the service of the Emporer Rudolph III’ (Blackmer sale).
