This map of the northern Adriatic and south eastern Europe by Abraham Ortelius is derived from the work of Giacomo Gastaldi in 1560. It draws on the ancient works of Herodotus, Plinius, Stabo,, Appianus, Virgilius, Plutarchus and Sidonius. Although dated 1585 it did not appear in Ortelius’ ‘Theatrum’ until 1590. This example is from the ‘Parergon’ of 1624 printed by Balthasar Moretus. Van den Broecke, M. no. 214; Zacharakis, C. no. 1622.
