A fine early large map of the Russian Empire from Robert Sayer’s ‘General Atlas’ published in 1773. Each sheet of this two sheet map bears its own title ‘The European part of the Russian Empire’ and ‘The Asiatic part of the Russian Empire’. It displays the track of 3 Russian ships along the north eastern shore in 1648 entering the North Pacific. ‘Bering’s I. where he was Cast away and Died in 1741’ is identified here. Nearby is an outline of the North American coast with the legend ‘Some pretend that this Land may be seen from Bering’s Island’. The map is derived from the cartography of the Imperial Academy in St. Petersburg. Shirley BL Atlases T.Say 2a no. 21.
