This is Martin Waldseemuller’s map of northern Africa as issued by Laurent Fries in the 1535 edition. By now Lorenz Fries whose maps were first issued in the 1522 edition had died. The blocks found their way into the possession of Melchoir and Gaspar Treschel. For this edition published in Lyon the brothers asked Michael Servetus to re-edit the text. It depicts the African coast from the Nile River delta round to the Gold Coast of West Africa. At the time of publication the interior of North Africa was better known than that of the south so there is some detail to be found. Various Kingdom’s are named with a large number of placenames along the coast. The Canary Islands are found off of the coast. Karrow, R.W. (16 c.) 28/40; Nordenskiold 209; Norwich, O.I. 286 (1513 edition); Pastoureau Ptolemee E 1535; Shirley BL T.Ptol 7d.
