Leonard Euler (1707-83) was a Swiss mapmaker from Basle and a noted mathematician and astronomer. After serving in the Russian Navy and ultimately became professor of mathematics at the Berlin Academy. This map of the British Isles was published in the ‘Atlas Geographicus’, 1753. Listed in Shirley’s book on the British Isles as anonymous it actually post-dates the cutoff for that work of 1750. Provenance: acquired from Mitchell Mcfarlane 2001; private English collection.
