This map in sheet form is here found as a folding map. Published in 1890, this example is updated to the year 1900. Adolf Stieler (1775-1836) worked for the publisher Justus Perthes (1749-1816) to produce ‘Stieler Hand-Atlas’ first published between 1817-34. Expanded and updated through the century, it proved a popular atlas. Augustus Heinrich Petermann (1822-78) began his career in Edinburgh under A. K. Johnston. From 1847 he worked in London, became a member of the royal Geographical Society before returning to Gotha, Germany, in 1854 to join the Perthes publishing firm. He founded and produced the famous journal named after him.

This map of South America was edited by H. Habenicht und O. Koffmahn. It draws on Petermann’s ‘Die süd-amerikanischen republiken Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay’ first published in 1875. Numerous insets occur in the lower corners and upper right are abbreviations, symbols and an explanation of the colour coding. Pink shading denotes British possessions and can be seen on the Falkland Islands (Malvinas). Yellow shading is a Dutch colony, purple for the French. Provenance: The Map House, London; Juan and Peggy Rada Collection. Dreyer-Eimbcke (1997); Tooley (1999-2004).
