Joseph Huddart (1741-1816) was a Captain in the East India Company as a hydrographer and civil engineer. This chart was one of many of his work which are found in Laurie and Whittle’s “Complete East India Pilot” which was first published in 1798. Although undoubtedly the survey was carried out in 1788 as dated it does not appear to have been published until 1794 as stated in the imprint. The straights of Gaspar are off the Island of Banca on the east coast of Sumatra just to the south of Singapore. Huddart, W. “Unpathed waters”; NMM 379 no. 156; Tooley’s Dictionary.
