This rare French woodcut map of Sardinia and southern Corsica is derived from that found in Girolamo Ruscelli’s ‘Geographia’, 1561. Whilst the map is derived from an Italian one, the text is a translation of Sebastian Munster’s ‘Cosmographia’ published in Basle by Francois de Belleforest (1530-83). He was a poet, historian and editor from Gascony, France. ‘La Cosmographie Universelle’ was published in 1575 in only the one edition. Pastoureau (1980) Belleforest I 2 no. 16; Imago Mundi 32 pp. 51-4; Pastoureau (1984) p. 57 no. 3; Shirley (2004) T.Belf 1a.
