The ‘Nederlandsche Vogelen’ by Cornelius Nozeman (1720-86) was published in Amsterdam in five volumes from 1770-1829. Nozeman was the son of a composer and was trained as a preacher. He developed a keen interest in natural history. It was the first comprehensive account of the avifauna of Holland. The plates depict all known species in the region at the time and frequently display the eggs and nests. Great care was placed in setting the birds in their natural habitats and in a natural position. Anker (1979) 369; ‘Fine Bird Books’ (1990) 98; Nissen IVB (1976) 648.
