An attractive folding map of the world in Mercator’s projection engraved by Langevin. The lower corners are filled by two cartouches featuring the costumes of the peoples of the world. Inside these are two further insets illustrating the relative heights of mountains and the comparative lengths of the rivers of the world. A central cartouche discusses the projection. The map itself contains vignettes depicting sailing, fishing, whaling etc. The map is filled with legends detailing each country, the sailing routes and other information. The cartography of the poles appears to be a particular feature of the map, especially in Antarctica. Provenance: private collection of Rodney Shirley.
