A superb EXTREMELY RARE PLAN of the forest of Fontainebleau to the south east of Paris with the Chateau at the centre. The extensive network of paths within the forest is depicted in great detail. There are even images of stag hunting with hounds all around the map. The nearby towns of Melun and Moret are shown to the right with further surrounding villages named. A ten line description is included lower right. Jean Boisseau, who styled himself ‘Enlumineur du Roy’, was very active in the French map market in the 1630s and 1640s. The map is not found in any regular atlas and is not listed in Pastoureau’s extensive study of French atlases. It has been found in composite atlases of the period collected by Boisseau. There is no text on the reverse and only one state is known. From c.1650 little is known of Boisseau, not even the date of his death is recorded. Part of the business was taken up by Jean Boissevin. Refer Burden (1996) no. 249. Not in Pastoureau.
