A fine engraving of Moor Park Mansion, the home of Lord Anson, “Our Second Drake” (Wallis). In 1740 the Admiralty dispatched Captain George Anson to the South Pacific to aggravate the Spanish. They suffered great loss of life and half of their ships within a year of sailing. Most of the loss of life was mainly to scurvy. Perseverance was rewarded with the capture of a very rich prize and the voyage was deemed a success on his return in 1744. Anson was duly knighted. The official account of the voyage was published in 1748 and enjoyed popular success. Anderson p. 128, Upcott I p. 623; Wallis ‘George Anson’s Voyage, 1740-44’, IMCoS Journal 50 pp. 7-12.
