A fine example of Samuel Augustus Mitchell’s 1834 ‘Map of the United States’, one of the finest general maps of the United States of the first half of the nineteenth century. With an inset map of North America and smaller insets of Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Rochester, Niagara Falls, Albany, Cincinnati, Washington, Charleston, New Orleans, the south part of Florida, and the south part of Maine. There is evidence to suggest that Samuel Augustus Mitchell was in fact either a cartographer or engraver, his role is more that of an editor. The chief cartographer and engraver of Mitchell’s publications is James H Young. Indeed the engravers sign themselves as J. H. Young, F. Dankworth, E. Yeager and E. F. Woodward. Mitchell’s firm along with that of Colton would dominate American map publishing for several decades.

This map was first published in 1834. Ristow states that in this issue it is unaltered with the exception of the addition of Mitchell’s name to the title however Rumsey illustrates an example of the 1834 which is identical save the date in the imprint. Below this is a magnificent engraving of an American eagle perched on a seashell boat near the shore designed by W. Mason. A lovely example of a scarce wall map printed from 9 sheets. Provenance: private Texan collection. Ristow (1985) pp. 309-10; Rumsey 4340.
