William Hogarth (1697-1764) is ‘considered to be the father of English caricature’ (Feaver). Hogarth began life in the hardest of ways with four years spent with his family in Fleet Prison; his father being a bankrupt teacher from the north of England. Aged seventeen he was apprenticed to a silver engraver before setting up as an engraver of trade cards. His free style of engraving which was his fresh perspective on the world around him found few admirers in the traditional markets. He took to subscription to reach a wider audience producing such classic series as “Marriage a la Mode”, “The Rake’s Progress”, “Industry and Idleness” amongst others. Despite his own highly inflaming political prints it was parliament which eventually granted his wish of a copyright law protecting the works of artists such as himself. John and Josiah Boydell later collected the drawing into the ‘Original Works of William Hogarth’, first published in 1790. Clayton (1997); Feaver (1988).
