John Arrowsmith’s important map of New Zealand produced as expected to a very high standard of accuracy. Arrowsmith’s reputation rests considerably on the fact that he never speculated about an unknown region. Hence the South Island is here quite empty of detail being as it was virtually unexplored. These areas that had been discovered are heavily annotated. The Arrowsmith publishers were founded by Aaron Arrowsmith. His son John Arrowsmith’s most notable work was the ‘London Atlas of Universal Geography’ for which this map was published. Lower right is a map of the world on Mercator’s projection displaying the British Isles and New Zealand in pink and the rest of the world in green. This example is the second state of three, the first being issued only seven months earlier. Phillips (1909-) no. 789; Tooley (1979) 89a.
