This map was first published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell in the ‘New General Atlas’. There is evidence to suggest that Mitchell wasn’t in fact either a cartographer or engraver, his role is more that of an editor. The chief cartographer and engraver of Mitchell’s publications is James H Young. This map appears to have been first issued in 1865, in 1872 it was updated to reflect the creation of the countries first National Park at Yellowstone in 1872, here curiously lacking. It displays the proposed Pacific Railroad route of Gov. Stevens in the north. However in this state the portion running through Montana is erased and re-routed to the south. Baskes 26.
