This map was first published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell in the ‘New General Atlas’. There is evidence to suggest that Mitchell wasn’t in fact either a cartographer or engraver, his role is more that of an editor. The chief cartographer and engraver of Mitchell’s publications is James H Young. This map appears to have been first issued in 1865 despite being dated 1860, here updated in its second state to 1867. It displays the newly formed Montana Territory of 1864 along with the proposed Pacific Railroad route of Gov. Stevens in the north. This state was issued before the creation of the Yellowstone National Park founded in 1872. Baskes 26.
