This map was first published in 1860 by Samuel Augustus Mitchell. There is evidence to suggest that Mitchell wasn’t in fact either a cartographer or engraver, his role is more that of an editor. The chief cartographer and engraver of Mitchell’s publications is James H Young. This one is by W. H. Gamble. This attractive map features the plains region between the Missouri/ Kansas border to the western boundary of Colorado which had only in this year 1861 been created. It displays the two great routes to the west from Joseph, Missouri running to the north labelled the ‘Pony Express Route’ and Fort Leavenworth through the southern region. ‘Denver City’ is located in the centre of Colorado with Boulder newly added for this the second state of the map. The ‘Gold Region’ is clearly labelled showing a number of the mining camps including Breckinridge, Canon City, Auraria and Central City. The whole is framed in a fine floral border. Wheat (1957) ‘Transmississippi West’ no. 1030, vol. 5 pp. 2-3.
