This map was first separately published with four border panels in 1617 by Jodocus Hondius (1595-1629) and was the prototype for others that followed. In 1633 at the hands of his brother Henricus Hondius, the borders were removed for its inclusion in the ‘Atlas Novus’. This example with Latin text on the verso was published in an edition of 1638. Henry Hondius (1597-1651) was a member of one of the most influential Dutch cartographic families. A very attractive map of the British Isles with three ornate cartouches, the title, scale, and inset map of the Orkney Islands. rovenance: acquired from Doreen Green in 2000; private English collection. Shirley (1991) 355a & 435, pl. 129; Van der Krogt, P. (Atlantes) 5000:1C.
