Since Shirley published his work on maps of the British Isles in 1988 this map by Jacques Chiquet has been discovered to have been first published by Antoine Menard as ‘Le Nouveau et Curieux Atlas Geographique et Historique’ in 1711. Chiquet re-published it in 1719 with the same title. The dates on the maps and Menard’s name are removed. Chiquet (c.1673-1721) was a French cartographer and engraver working in Paris on the Rue St. Jacques. Provenance: Doreen Green 1994; private English collection. Phillips (1909-) 4279; Shirley (1988) Chiquet 1; Shirley (2004) T.Men 1b; Tooley’s Dictionary (1999-2004).
