An attractive original coloured map of South America derived from that published by Guillaume de L’Isle who is duly accredited in the title. The continent is divided into the various Spanish and Portuguese jurisdictions. The Pacific records the voyages of Ferdinand Magellan (1519-22), Francis Drake (1577-80), Hernando Gallego and Alvaro de Mendana (1595-96), Olivier van Noort (1598-1601), and Jacob Le Maire and Willem Schouten (1615-17). The western edge of the map records the Solomon Islands.

The Ottens family of mapmakers in Amsterdam was begun by Joachim Ottens (1663-1719). He had two sons, Reiner (1698-1750) and Joshua (1704-65), both joining the business. Following Joachim’s death in 1719, the business was continued by his widow and sons until her death in 1725. In 1726 the partnership of the brothers Reiner and Joshua was formed. They were not he most successful publishers and their stock was limited. Their atlases lack any date and are invariably entitled ‘Atlas Minor’. Provenance: Juan and Peggy Rada Collection. Koeman (1967-70) pp. 85-9, no. 254.
