Kars, formerly of Ancient Armenia, is now within Turkey near the Armenian border. It has a rich ancient history. It is situated in north eastern Turkey on a high plateau on the Kars River. This manuscript map of the city and its surrounding landscape features the defences around the town. Across the river ‘9’ is identified in the key as Williams Pasha Tabia, this alongside those of Churchill, Teesdale and Thompson connects this work with the Russian siege of the town defended by the British during the Crimean War.
