In the early 1860’s Alvin Jewitt Johnson took control of the atlas publishers G. Woolworth Colton. His ‘New Illustrated Family Atlas’ brought out a whole new series of maps into the upheaval of the American Civil War raging at the time. This map of the American North West displays the routes of exploration for the Pacific Railroad by Gov. Stevens. In this example the eastern border of Idaho is not clearly defined. Ristow (1985) p. 325.
