Two plans side by side of Grenoble and Romans sur Isere displaying the old walled towns. The ‘Civitates Orbis Terrarum’ was compiled by George Braun (1541-1622) the Canon of Cologne Cathedral. Braun produced a total of over 500 city views and maps published in six parts between 1572 and 1617. Most of the engraving was the work of Simon Novellanus and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590), many after drawings by George Hoefnagel. This item was published in the third volume of the famous work. The main buildings are shown in profile. With Latin text to the verso. At the foot of the Alps lies Grenoble, now a city of some importance is shown from an elevated birds-eye perspective. The town of Romans lies on a tributary of the River Rhône. Both plans are purported to be drawn from the work of Belleforest in ‘La Cosmographie Universelle’, Paris, 1575. Koeman, C.
