Winslow Homer (1836-1910) began his artistic career as a graphic designer. His famous oil and watercolour paintings were produced in the second half of his life when he had moved to Prout’s Neck, Maine, and lived in virtual seclusion. Before that, Homer was America’s best known and most popular illustrator and his engravings appeared regularly in numerous national magazines. They illustrated American life in cities, on the farm, at the front during the Civil War, at the seaside, in the Adirondacks, and the White Mountains, at sea and in the harbour. At their best, Homer’s techniques in his engravings became important parts of his paintings.
