Berthe Hoola van Nooten (1817-92) was collecting the material for this book in Java during the early 1860s. The plates for the ‘Fleurs Fruits et Feuillages choisis de l’Ile de Java’ were the work of P. Depannamaeker and are some of the first to use the new technology of chromolithography. The plates could not be better described than thus: ‘Van Nooten was clearly a more than competent artist, for the splendid tropical plants, with their lush foliage, vividly coloured flowers and exotic fruit have been depicted with great skill. She managed to accentuate the splendour of each species by adopting a style that combined great precision and clarity with a touch of neo-Baroque exuberance, revelling in the rich forms and colours of the tropics.’ Nissen BBI (1966) 931; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 (1976-86) 3025; ‘ Oak Spring Flora’ (1997) p. 330.
