Large scale wall map in four sheets, ‘one of the most elaborately engraved maps ever published that includes North America …’ (Schwartz & Ehrenberg). It’s elaborate cartouche provide a tableau of the Americas, depicting native Indian rituals, historic events of the great explorers, portraits, and the local flora and fauna. California is still depicted as an island, although with some uncertainty. A note states that the ‘moderns’ believe it to be part of the mainland. Japan is depicted enlarged in size from reality. Numerous routes of the great ocean explorers are also marked. Arguably the most attractive map of America ever published. Tooley, Mapping of America p.130/ Leighly, California as an Island pl.xx.
