This map is derived from the landmark map of Guillaume Delisle’s of the southern part of North America first published in 1703. It shows many of the English settlements along the East Coast and illustrates the discoveries of D’Iberville along the Gulf Coast and the Mississippi River. The French territory of Floride dominates the middle of the continent. The map features particular detail in the western portions relating to present-day Texas and New Mexico, particularly of the Spanish missions and Hopi mesas. It was published in the encyclopaedic seven volume ‘Atlas Historique’. Martin, J. & R. p.93; Shirley ‘Atlases in the BL’ T.Chat-1a; Koeman II p. 33; Van Waning ‘Chatelain’s Atlas Historique’ in IMCoS Journal 120 pp. 7-15.
