Following the successful publication of the folio Mercator-Hondius atlas the need was seen for a more portable smaller version that might reach a wider public. The ‘Atlas Minor’ was issued into a relatively crowded market. There were miniature Ortelius atlases and those published by Barent Langenes and Petrus Bertius also. This work was of a slightly larger format allowing for more detail to be included. The formula proved successful. This map of Wales is derived from the Christopher Saxton general map of England and Wales first issued in 1589. Provenance: acquired 1990 for a private English collection. Not in Booth (1977); not in Evans (1964); Koeman II pp. 508-10, ME 186 no. 20; Roberts (1994) [6].
