Sidney Hall (fl.1818-1860) began his career as an engraver for the Arrowsmith family. His first county maps were those published by Samuel Leigh in 1820. The first edition of the “British Atlas” was issued in 1831. Carroll refers to an edition of 1834 issued without title page exactly as this example with cover title. Provenance: Roy Harvey Johnstone. Sotheby’s 20.9.01 lot 45. Carroll 94.iii; Chubb 452.
