William Maitland (c.1693-1757) was a successful Scottish merchant who after making his fortune moved to London to pursue his antiquarian interests. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1733. His ‘History of London’ was first published in 1739. A second enlarged edition was published by Thomas Osborne along with others in 1756. It is from this edition that this plan of Baynards Castle Ward centred on St. Paul’s Cathedral was published. Insets of St Bennet’s Church, St Martin’s Church and St Andrew’s church surround the plan. A portion of the old London city wall is seen upper left, and the Fleet ‘Ditch’ runs along the western boundary. Adams (1983) 38 no. 28; Tooley’s Dictionary (1999-2004).
