Melchoir Tavernier was a member of a prestigious family firm of cartographers started by his father Gabriel and uncle Mechoir I. In 1644 he would sell much of the business to Pierre Mariette. This map features the Iberian peninsula in antiquity and was engraved to accomany Charles Vialart’s ‘Geographia Sacra’ published in 1641. Vailart, also known as Charles de Saint Paul, was Bishop of Avranches. With a very ornate title cartouche lower right. Not in Pastoureau; Shirley ‘Atlases in the British Library G.Vial 1a no. 5.
