This rare broadside image depicts the line of battle between the English and French fleets off Port Mahon, in the Battle of Minorca, on 20 May 1756. The image was drawn by a person on Board the English Fleet. It was the first naval engagement of the Seven Years War in Europe. The French had taken Minorca and Admiral Byng was dispatched to recapture the island. The text below sets the scene beginning 19 May at 11.00 a.m. when the Phenix first spotted a fleet of “16 Sail of French Men of War”. The events continue through 8 minutes past 8 in the evening of the 20th, the day of the engagement. The French were victorious and Byng retired to Gibraltar. There was severe criticism of his actions in the battle and for this he was court-martialled and executed. At the very bottom of the broadside is detail of the vessels in each fleet, name, captain and number of guns. The English fleet being at the top of the view numbered and the French below lettered. The broadside is priced at 1 shilling. Although there is no name on the broadside we were able to identify the imprint address courtesy of Ashley Baynton-Williams as being that of Matthias Darly (fl.1744-78), an engraver and printseller. National Maritime Museum PAF4595; Worms & Baynton-Williams (2011).
