Both Charles Smith (fl.1799-1852) and John Cary were great rivals in the first half of the nineteenth century. Smith’s ‘New English Atlas’ first published in 1804 was a large, handsome and detailed county atlas. Indeed Cary would model his similarly entitled work of 1809 on it. Smith’s county maps bear the distinction of being the first to show longitudes from the meridian of Greenwich Observatory. This work is probably Charles Smith’s most respected. There were several later editions to 1839. Towards the end of this period the maps are found for sale separately with the imprint of James Wyld (1790-1836) the successor to William Faden. In this instance his imprint is found on the slipcase and a paper label pasted to the title. Below this is engraved ‘Corrected to 1832’. Quixley (1966) no. 47.
