This map of the county of Kent is one of a series published in ‘The Political Magazine’ between 1782 and 1790, all carry the name of the engraver, John Lodge (fl.1755-96). First appearing in 1780, the ‘Political Magazine’ was published by John Bew. John Murray (1737-93) joined Bew in partnership in February 1785 and from April of that year was in sole control. This map bears Murray’s imprint below and indicates the VERY RARE FIRST STATE. From October 1789 it was in the hands of Robert Butters. The magazine’s last issue was in December 1791. Shortly after, at an unknown date the ‘Atlas of Great Britain and Ireland’ was published. That collection of maps draws on all those issued in the ‘Political Magazine’ except for those of the Isle of Wight and Isle of Man. The imprints of the ‘Political Magazine’ and of the engraver Lodge are removed from the plates entirely.
