The map extends from the north coast of Kent to Aldborough and Thorp Ness on the Suffolk coast. The first issue of this fine large scale sea chart of the River Thames estuary appears to have been in 1781 in Robert Sayer’s ‘Channel Pilot’. It also made appearances in his ‘Coasting Pilot’ from about the same period. This issue if from an edition by Laurie and Whittle who took over Robert Sayer’s business on his death in 1794. As identified in the title cartouche James Grosvenor was a pilot who appears to have updated the map from its original version. Sanderson (1971) no. 416 no. 2; Shirley (2004) M.Say 6a no. 2 (an earlier state).
