This Geological map of the State of Massachusetts is by Edward Hitchcock who was an noted professor of chemistry and natural history at Amherst College. In 1830 he was selected to undertake a geological survey of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. First published in 1832 the map and report marked a turning point as it was first geological survey of an entire state undertaken at government expense. Reprinted in 1833 Hitchcock made further surveys and updated the map leading to this fourth edition in 1841. The map displays 21 different strata keyed lower left and displays symbols for deposits of plumbago, coal, iron, lead, copper, manganese and zinc. An uncommon map naturally issued in small numbers at the time. Marcou & Marcou No. 200; Phillips (A) p. 401.
