This is the allegorical frontispiece to Joan Blaeu’s volume on America which only appears in some examples of the magnificent ‘Atlas Major’. The scene features a central native Indian figure, whose brutality is highlighted by having one foot on a European’s dismembered head which has an arrow through it. In the foreground are some of the mineral fruits of the continent, silver. The background contains a mining scene. Joan Blaeu (fl. 1598-1673) was the eldest son and business successor of Willem Blaeu. Koeman (1967-70) BL 56.
