This is a plan of the parish of St Martins-in-the-Fields in London. It takes in the whole of Covent Garden, The Strand, White Hall, Charing Cross, the ‘great Mewes’ (now Trafalgar Square), and ‘Leicester Fields’ (now Leicester Square). The area surrounding Hanover Square upper left, the first square in Mayfair, was only laid out from 1717, just three years before this was published. Its western boundary is Bond Street.

It was published in the best illustrated edition of John Stow’s ‘A Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster’ in 1720. The plan was drawn by John Strype (1643-1737) a cleric who wrote and edited several works. He claims to have spent over 15 years in preparing the book.
