The earlier of two plates illustrating southern Italy, Sicily and Malta. It also shows the coasts of Sardinia, Greece with Corfu offshore, Tunis, and the nearby island of Lampedusa. The Italian mainland is shown south from ‘Civito Vechia’ and Rome. Interestingly Mount Etna on Sicily is illustrated erupting, but no reference is made to the other great volcano of the region, Vesuvius. The second plate was introduced by 1727 and is differentiated by a rectangular title cartouche upper centre. This rare plate was engraved like others in this edition by James Bennett (fl.1675-77) whose imprint appears lower right. It was first published in ‘The English Pilot’ of the Mediterranean Sea in 1677 by John Seller. This example is published by Richard Mount and Thomas Page in the 1711 edition of the ‘English Pilot Part III’ covering the same region. It is adorned with a decorative compass rose. Sanderson (1971) 425 no. 137; Shirley (2004) M.M&P 3a no. 13.
