These two maps record the annular solar eclipse of 1 April 1764. An annular eclipse of the sun is when the moon is too far away from the earth to completely cover the sun. There have only been 8 total eclipses of the sun in the last 500 years in the UK. The larger more detailed item was published by the ‘London Magazine’ issue of January 1764. The shadow passed over the southeast of England and northern France, just taking in London and Paris. It illustrates either side the mechanics of the shadow and illustrates how it will look from various cities. It also provides detail about the duration of the shadow and time. Also offered is that engraved for the ‘Gentleman’s Magazine’ which was published the following month. Jolly (1990) I Gent 172 & Lond 234.
