An attractive map of England and Wales by Matthaus Seutter. It is coloured by Anglo-Saxon regions although the individual modern counties are named along with their borders. The map is beautifully adorned with a title cartouche featuring a mixture of allegorical and real-life scenes of trade and agriculture. This map was first issued later than his map of the British Isles and is not found in earlier issues of his ‘Atlas Novus’. Matthaus Seutter (1678-c.1757) was an engraver, globe maker and map publisher in Augsburg where he was born and died. He was apprenticed to Johann Baptist Homann and his influences can be clearly seen in his work. Although he was Homann’s main competitor, his work was not largely original. In 1731 he was though named Imperial Geographer to Karl VI. He married three times and had thirteen children! Only four of them joined the firm. His son-in-law Tobias Conrad Lotter continued the firm after his death. Provenance: Johannes Muller 1999; private English collection. Shirley (1988) Seutter 2.2; Shirley (2004) T.Seu 2a no. 44; Tooley’s Dictionary.
