THE ONLY ENGLISH EDITION OF RUSSIA. This volume on Russia takes in Finland which at the time was a possession, much of Poland, and takes journeys to Tehran, Peking, and Port Arthur using the Trans-Siberian Railway only completed in 1903. This work is particularly interesting as it was published in the year in which Russia joined the First World War. St. Petersburg here named so was renamed Petrograd on 31 August to sound less German.

Karl Ludwig Johannes Baedeker (1801-59) was a German publisher whose publications became the authoritative guidebooks for tourists. Initially the guides were published with tan covers but from 1856 the trademark red binding was introduced. The guides included everything the traveller could want to know: accommodation, restaurants, tipping, sights, routes, transport, walks etc. The first guide in English appeared in 1861, following his death. The family continued the business under his sons, Ernst, Karl, Fritz and Hans. Provenance: ‘to Edward Hutton F & F Russia … sicut erat’ or ‘Russia as it was’, Edwrd Hutton (1875-1969) was a British author of travel books and various Italian subjects.
