This map of the British Isles is derived from the Gerard Mercator’s folio map of 1595. Following the successful publication of the folio Mercator-Hondius atlas in 1606, the need was seen for a more portable smaller version that might reach a wider public. The ‘Atlas Minor’ was issued into a relatively crowded market. There were miniature Ortelius atlases and those published by Barent Langenes and Petrus Bertius also. This work was of a slightly larger format allowing for more detail to be included. The formula proved successful. Provenance: Doreen Green 1995 for a private English collection. Koeman II pp. 508-10, ME 188 no. 8; Shirley (1991) 283.
