An uncommon map of the British Isles published by the firm of Homann Heirs. Johann Christoph Homann (1703-30) had died young and the business was continued as Homann Heirs by various parties. They worked with several cartographers including Tobias Mayer (1723-62) who in 1749 produced this map for the firm. He was an astronomer and mathematician who became a professor of mathematics at Gottingen. He won the Board of Longitude’s prize for discovering a means of measuring longitude at sea in 1765 along with John Harrison. Two different plates are known for this map, this is the first according to Shirley with ‘ao 1749’ in the title. Provenance: Ivan Deverall 1996; private English collection. Shirley (1988) Homann 6 plate 1.3; Tooley’s Dictionary.
