Sebastian Munster’s ‘Cosmography’ was first published by Henri Petri in 1544. Petri died in 1579 and his son Sebastian succeeded him. He set about replacing the old blocks with new ones. First published in 1588, this German text version was is from the second edition in 1592. Its busier format was designed to emulate copperplate engravings which enabled closer engraving. Curiously it excludes the northern portion of Scotland and the west coast of Ireland. Provenance: acquired from Doreen Green, 1991; private English collection.
