This map of the East Riding of Yorkshire is by Joan Blaeu (1598-1673), arguably the most famous of the Dutch cartographers. Joan Blaeu’s father Willem established his firm in 1599 as instrument and globe makers. He went on to produce some of the highest quality atlases ever published. The fourth volume of the ‘Atlas Novus’ focused on England and Wales. Ultimately the atlas was expanded even further to form the ‘Atlas Major’ with nearly 600 maps and prints. This example is from the very rare final Spanish text issue of the ‘Atlas Major’ whose production was interrupted by the great fire at the Blaeu publishing house in 1672. Along the sides of the map are the arms of the nobles in the county. With French text to the verso. Koeman Bl 42A p. 174 no. 348; Van der Krogt, P. (Atlantes) 5367:2; Rawnsley (1970) 10; Skelton (1970) 28.
